Plaintiffs appear in Athens at a press conference announcing the
filing of a criminal lawsuit against Chinese officials responsible
for the persecution of Falun Gong.
ATHENS (FDI) -- One week prior to the opening of the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, three Falun Gong practitioners, including 37 year-old Australian citizen Chris Cominos, jointly submitted a criminal lawsuit against former Chinese leader Jiang Zemin, former Vice-Premier Li Lanqing, and Politburo Standing Committee member Luo Gan for genocide and torture.
On August 5th 2004, European and Greek Falun Dafa Associations in conjunction with International Advocates for Justice (IAFJ), sponsored a press conference in Athens to announce to filing of the suit (press statement).
The lawsuit is based on Greek criminal law, and the sentence can be as high as 20 years in prison. Once formally accepted by the Greek court, Luo Gan, Li Lanqing and Jiang Zemin will be summoned to court upon entering Greece. After it abolished dictatorship in 1974, Greece created tough laws to prevent the government from committing crimes of torture.
Lawsuits have been filed in the United States, Europe, Asia, Africa and now Greece to bring those responsible for the atrocities to justice and to put an end to the genocide of Falun Gong in China. (website)
Mr Cominos, who grew up in Melbourne and who has been residing in Sydney for the last few months, is the lead plaintiff in the action and was physically abused by Chinese Police when he visited Beijing in 2001. Ireland resident Zhao Ming and American Frances Bakatsias, residing in Athens, are also plaintiffs.
Mr Cominos was born in Greece and has practiced Falun Gong for more than five years. He is very proud of Athens for holding the 2004 Olympics. He said: "Like China, Greece has great ancient culture and moral heritage. I hope that China will end the inhuman persecution of Falun Gong, uphold the spirit of peace, justice and mutual respect, and take this spirit to the next Olympics in Beijing."
The Chinese ambassador to Greece recently addressed the media after a meeting at Greece's foreign ministry office. He said: "The Olympic ideal is not related to human rights..." He continued to say that it is wrong to link the situation in the field of human rights to the Beijing Olympics games.
During its bid for procuring the 2008 Olympic Games three years ago, the Chinese Government indicated that the organization of the Games would contribute to human rights improvements in China. The Olympic Watch Committee has already twice condemned the ongoing persecution of Falun Gong and has called on the Chinese Government to respect freedom of speech and religion thereby putting an end to the genocide of Falun Gong.
"Hitler used the 1936 Olympic Games to cover up his genocidal policy against Jewish people," says Mr. Cominos. "Sadly, this seems to be the same tactic Jiang is using to cover up his illicit bid to 'eradicate Falun Gong' in China."
Mr. Cominos added, "This lawsuit filed in Greece recalls the spirit of the Olympics, so as not to allow history to repeat itself in China."
The Chinese Olympic delegation arrived in Athens on August 8.

Background
Falun Gong, also known as Falun Dafa (about), is a practice of meditation and exercises with teachings based on the universal principle of "Truthfulness-Compassion-Tolerance." Practiced in over 50 countries worldwide, Falun Gong has roots in traditional Chinese culture. With government estimates of as many as 100 million practicing Falun Gong in China, China's then-Communist leader, Jiang Zemin, outlawed the peaceful practice in July 1999 (report). Since that time, Jiang's regime has intensified its propaganda campaign to turn public opinion against the practice while imprisoning, torturing and even murdering those who practice it. The Falun Dafa Information Center has verified details of 1,022 deaths (reports / sources) since the persecution of Falun Gong in China began in 1999. In October 2001, however, Government officials inside China reported that the actual death toll was well over 1,600, which means the current actual death toll is likely over 5,000. Hundreds of thousands have been detained, with more than 100,000 being sentenced to forced labor camps, typically without trial.

(Clearwisdom.net) On the 11th of August 2004, a grand parade was successfully held by Falun Dafa practitioners in Athens, Greece. The parade started from Kotzia Square and went through the city centre to Syntagma Square, attracting local people, tourists, and reporters from different television stations, newspapers and radio stations. Twenty different media organisations were taking photos, interviewing and writing stories about Falun Gong practitioners who had come to Athens from different parts of Europe, Australia and the United States.

(Clearwisdom.net) The Chinese version of Clearwisdom reported on the plight of Wang Xia, a young lady from Bayanzhuoer District of Linhe City, Inner Mongolia. Wang, 30-years old, was sentenced to 7 years in labor camp for telling people about Falun Gong. She was detained in the Huhehaote City Women's Prison. In the past two years, she conducted hunger strikes to protest persecution and was force-fed. The prison authorities also injected her with unknown drugs. Before she was detained, she weighed more than 120 pounds. She now only weighs about 45 pounds and lapses in and out of consciousness.

Wang Xia was persecuted to near death, weighing only about 45 pounds
Wang Xia's body looks badly distorted. She was persecuted to near death in the prison. The prison doctor said that she would live only about 2 or 3 more days. A person in charge of the prison said in front of several guards and a "610 Office" leader, "Move her to the mortuary for cremation!" The "610 Office" leader said: "We can't allow her to die in prison, let her family take her back as soon as possible. As her story has been posted on the Internet, her death can be treated as suicide if she dies at home." Those were the words of the law enforcement officials.
On June 26, 2004, the prison officials told Wang's father to come to the prison to take her back. At that time, Wang was unconscious and her father took her to a hospital for emergency rescue. However, she was forced to leave the hospital on the following day. After she got home, Wang started to show signs of mental disorder, so her family then rushed her to hospital again. After about 20 days, because her family didn't have enough money for treatment, Wang was forced to leave the hospital. She fades in and out of consciousness and shows signs of suffering from mental disorder. It is suspected that the she was injected with harmful psychotropic drugs. Even after she has been persecuted to this extent, when she was alert, with a very weak voice she said: "Falun Dafa is good."
Background
Wang Xia, 30, is a resident of Bayanzhuoer District of Linhe City, Inner Mongolia. She was sentenced to 7 years in labor camp for clarifying the truth about Falun Gong. During the summer of 2002, she was abducted the Inner Mongolia First Women's Prison. In the prison, in order to cover up the persecution, guards told her inmates that Wang was detained for "illegally selling CDs." Wang went on hunger strikes to protest the detention and tell people that she was innocent.
Over a long period of time, guards repeatedly force-fed her. They tied her arms to a bed so that she couldn't move during force-feeding. They also left the tube for force-feeding in her esophagus and only did a cursory cleaning every 7 or 14 days. Wang conducted hunger strikes over a period of 2 years, and guards force-fed her each time. In these two years, guards also shocked her with electric batons, hung her up and beat her. Wang was persecuted to the point of being in critical condition several times.
On May 12 and July 30, 2004, the Chinese version of Clearwisdom published urgent reports about Wang Xia.
In Inner Mongolia, several centers including the Huhehaote Women Labor Camp have been used to persecute Falun Gong practitioners. From 1999 to now, thousands of practitioners have been detained there, and almost every practitioner has been beaten and shocked with electric batons. To date, nine practitioners have been killed, dozens have been sent to mental hospitals, and hundreds are still being persecuted in these centers.
We call on all kind-hearted people worldwide to pay close attention to Wang Xia's case and the persecution. The Jiang regime is still brutally persecuting good people.
(Clearwisdom.net)
Our family of three had the fortune to come to know Falun Dafa in May of 1997. My mother, in her 60's, was a retiree from the Justice Department. When she was young she had two operations, one for a Caesarean section and another for the removal of uterine fibroids. She suffered complications due to the two operations, and was in a frail condition. She also suffered from insufficient blood flow to her heart, kidney stones, arthritis and other illnesses. She had been tormented by illness, but after practicing Falun Gong, her body went through a dramatic change: her illnesses and pain disappeared, and her face had a pink glow. Her short temper also changed and, unlike before, she had a smile on her face.
Upon seeing the changes in her, many of our friends and relatives also started practicing Falun Gong. My father is a retiree from the Statistics Department. After starting practicing Falun Gong, he kicked his smoking habit of many years, and became so energetic that in his 70's he looked like he was in his 50's. I'm 24 and had just joined the work force at a government office. My parents had me after they were in their 50's, and therefore they spoiled and pampered me very much. I used to be gluttonous and lazy. I also had a hot temper and I bickered and fought with my parents all the time. I would throw a tantrum when things didn't go my way. After I began practicing Falun Gong, I understood that I should hold myself to the standard of "Truthfulness-Compassion-Tolerance": I consider other people first when I do things, I'm kind to others, I gradually got rid of my hot temper, I learned to be considerate of my parents and took the initiative to help out at home. As such, our whole family had a nice relationship and the atmosphere was peaceful at home; our lives became happy and fulfilling.
However, the Jiang group's suppression of Falun Gong shattered our peaceful lives. I will never forget the horrible day of July 20, 1999 when this extreme persecution began. Practitioners all over the country have been constantly arrested, sent to forced labor camps or illegally sentenced. Practitioners were deprived of the rights to appeal via normal channels. Media propaganda launched a large-scale and widespread campaign to attack Teacher and Falun Gong. People looked at us with hatred and discrimination because they listened to and believed the twisted reports about Falun Gong. Policemen used the excuse of "questioning" us to barge into our home and asked us to insult Teacher and Falun Dafa. They forced us to submit Falun Dafa books to them and write statements to denounce Falun Gong. Our whole family was constantly in fear. Under such forceful media influence and pressure, my parents no longer dared to practice. All of a sudden my father turned into an older man and started smoking one cigarette after another. My mother's body quickly showed serious symptoms of illness and she was sent to a hospital. Her condition kept worsening and in the end she was diagnosed with cancer.
Yet, Jiang's group did not stop brutally persecuting my family. One night around 10 p.m., just after my mother had undergone an operation, the deputy chief of the Political Security Office in the county police department, Zhao, led a group of people to invade my home. They illegally searched it and took away our Falun Dafa books. They took me away by force and I was illegally detained for "disrupting social order." My ill mother begged them to let me go, so the policemen took the chance to extort 3000 Yuan from us and asked my parents to write so-called "Guarantee Statements." They illegally detained me for a month, after which I was "out on bail pending arraignment."
After I was released, my mother's health condition deteriorated even more because of the frightening situation. Consequently, she was hospitalized for treatment. I kept her company and took care of her day and night. Yet, the authorities escalated their efforts against us. They couldn't wait to send me to a brainwashing class conducted by the county's "610 Office", even before my mother was discharged from the hospital. They also extorted 1000 Yuan from my work unit as a class fee. They forced me to watch video programs that defamed Teacher and Falun Gong. They also forced me to act against my conscience and write the so-called "profound understanding" and "repentance understanding" to slander Teacher and Falun Gong. As a result I was drowned in deep suffering and regret for a long time and I could not break out of it. Jiang's group did not ease their persecution against my family because of my compromise. On New Year's Eve 2002, policemen from the county's Beicheng Police Station again sent for a group of policemen to knock on our door and harass us in the middle of the night, claiming that they would climb over the wall if we were to refuse to open the door. My father could not take one blow after another like that and he was in total shock. It resulted in a mental breakdown and was sent to the Madian Mental Hospital, where he was diagnosed with schizophrenia. He was hospitalized for three months, which cost us 4000 Yuan. He still needs to take medicine to treat his condition.
My mother's health was already failing, and with one distress after another, her health condition worsened. My mother's deteriorating health and my father's mental breakdown awoke me: Our submitting to humiliation and, against our conscience, compromising with the perpetrators can only make the evil persecute the good and innocent even more. Only by steadfastly holding to truth and justice, and awakening more people to unite together to oppose this trampling and persecution of human beings' benevolent nature and moral conscience, and exposing these vicious acts, can we prevent the persecution from happening again. I'm grateful to Teacher for giving me the opportunity to start practicing Falun Dafa all over again, so that I can regain my conscience and have renewed hope for a new life.
On the 2002 National Day, I rejected all the acts that were not in line with Falun Dafa that I had committed in the past under high pressure, and I submitted a solemn declaration statement to the county's "610 Office" and police department. I also went to Beijing to expose the atrocities against us. I appealed and called for justice for Falun Dafa. I unfolded a banner with a message that read, "Teacher Li Hongzhi is Good and Falun Dafa is Good" at the gate tower in the Tiananmen Square and I cried Falun Dafa practitioners' heartfelt message out loud: "Falun Dafa is good! Falun Dafa is good!"
Afterwards, the Tiananmen Square policemen brutally beat me up, dragged me into a police car and took me to the Tiananmen Police Station. They photographed, searched and interrogated me against my will. They held me in a detention center in the Beijing Shijingshan Precinct. I was assigned a number, searched, beaten up and thrown in jail. After a month I was extradited back to my county detention center for further imprisonment and mistreatment. I was put in forced labor and woken up in the middle of the night to deprive me of sleep. They put me in handcuffs and shackles because I refused to give up practicing Falun Gong. During my illegal detention I was twice sent to a brainwashing class and underwent mental persecution. My wages were withheld. My supervisor was implicated and criticized; my "civilized-minded unit" award was rescinded.
After learning that I was detained, my mother was worried sick, which caused her health condition to decline so drastically that she was barely breathing. After finding out that I was to be sent to a forced labor camp, she felt so totally hopeless that she refused to eat or drink, and she also refused any treatment. On November 9, 2002, my mother left the world with regret and pain.
Jiang's group has lost its humanity. Not only did they forbid me to attend my mother's funeral procession, they also escalated their efforts against me. They sentenced me to a two-year forced labor term without going through any legal procedure. Faced with such a cruel persecution and having no place to turn to appeal for justice (after July 20, 1999, Jiang Zemin ordered the legal community not to defend Falun Gong practitioners in court), in order to not cooperate with the illegal forced labor persecution, I jumped from a window on the second floor of a brainwashing center, which caused fractures in my lumbar vertebra and left ankle and damaged the nerves in my right foot. I was bedridden for four or five months. After two operations and hobbling on a crutch for three months, I'm still unable to walk normally. This has created difficulties in my life and cost my family and my work unit tens of thousands of Yuan. In an attempt to cover up the fact that they had persecuted me and to hide their criminal acts, the county's "610 Office" framed Falun Gong through this incident and spread rumors all over, claiming that I tried to commit suicide and went insane from practicing Falun Gong. Their actions and means are really cruel and shameless.
Jiang's group has been implementing the policy of "defaming their reputation, bankrupting them financially, and destroying them physically" on Falun Gong practitioners, and as a result countless good families have been broken apart and ruined.
(Clearwisdom.net) In the Baoding City Forced Labor Camp, the guards have been severely persecuting Falun Gong practitioners who are firm in cultivation. Practitioners are not allowed to call their families, their family members are not allowed to come and visit them, they are forbidden to go to sleep until 11 p.m. or even later if there is a lot of work to do.
The very first thing Dafa practitioners encounter when they are sent to this labor camp is that the guards will attempt to force them to renounce Falun Gong and to write a 4-page statement. The 4-page statement is to write abusive words on four full pages to defame Master and defame Dafa. If one refuses to write the statement, he or she will be tortured. The form of torture is to force practitioners to stand 24 hours a day for many days, depriving practitioners of sleep, and making the practitioner stand still even while eating meals. As time goes by, the whole body will become swollen. Not only that, the guards also routinely use "leaning against a big board," (1) electric batons, "holding and squatting," (2) depriving practitioners of sleep by having two prisoners watch a practitioner in turn so as to not let the practitioner close his eyes. Practitioners will suffer from being beaten, kicked, and struck with sticks as soon as they close their eyes. The fourth floor in the female division is an evil place dedicated to torturing Dafa practitioners.
To protest such inhumane torture, detained Dafa practitioners went on a hunger strike. The guards then adopted even more vicious torture methods: force feeding with the feeding tube extending to the stomach, force feeding human excrement and urine, force feeding concentrated salt solution.
Several practitioners have become victims of such inhumane torture.
Ms. Zhang Yiqin was a native of Baoding City in her sixties. She went on a hunger strike to protest the guards persecuting innocent Dafa practitioners. The guards force-fed her with a concentrated salt solution. Zhang Yiqin vomited blood after the force feeding and felt extreme pain in the chest. Twenty days later, she had a high fever of 40 o C for a long time. After physical examination, it was found that the salt solution went into her lungs. She vomited a large amount of blood stained with purulence. All rescue measures were ineffective, and she died shortly afterwards.
Ms. Ma Qingyun is a native of Baoding District. She went on a hunger strike to resist the cruel torture. The guards pinched her nose and pried her mouth open to forcibly feed her, and the solution went into her lungs. Ma Qingyun vomited a lot of blood stained with purulence and suffered from severe pain in the chest.
Ms. Liu Jun'ge is a native of Baoding District in her fifties. The guards attempted to force her to renounce Falun Gong. She refused to write the 4-page statement, and the guards shocked her with electric batons. They couldn't find sticks so they hit Liu Jun'ge with stools. Because Liu Jun'ge was forced to stand for a long time and was deprived of sleep, her blood pressure went way up and she developed symptoms of a stroke.
Ms. Wang Junxian is a native of Baoding District. The guards attempted to force her to renounce Falun Gong. First, they applied the torture method "leaning against a big board" against Wang Junxian for more than ten days. Several guards took turns watching her and forbade her from sleeping. In the second round, the guards forced Wang Junxian to "hold and squat" and tied up her knees. Wang Junxian was forced to maintain the squatting position 24 hours a day and could not close her eyes. Later, Wang Junxian was forced to stand. During this time, the vicious guards adopted an even more malicious torture method. Several guards pushed Wang Junxian to the ground, gagged her with a towel and then stabbed her palms and feet with needles. They taped her mouth with adhesive tape to silence her so that people downstairs could not hear her cry from pain. After they silenced Wang Junxian, they beat and kicked her fiercely with sticks and leather shoes.
Because Wang Junxian had her knees tied up for a long time before, her left leg was disabled for several months. The guard who was monitoring her was Guo Shaohua. Guo once said, "I really want to cut the main veins on her legs." How evil! Later a guard told Wang Junxian, "If we ask you to go downstairs to work, don't tell others it was because anything we did that your leg is crippled when they ask you about it!" The guard asked another prisoner to warn Wang Junxian, "Don't tell anyone what happened on the fourth floor, otherwise..."
Ms. Yuan Guihua is a native of Baoding District. Because the guards tried to force her to renounce Falun Gong, she went on a hunger strike to protest. One day, suddenly, guard Guo Shaohua, who had been monitoring her, came downstairs with a pair of broken scissors. She asked for glue to fix the handle of the scissors. When asked how the scissors were broken, Guo replied with abusive words, "It was she who caused the scissors to break." At that time, Guo Shaohua was torturing Yuan Guihua on the fourth floor to try to force her to renounce Falun Gong. Yuan Guihua didn't have any freedom and could not move at all; how could she break the scissors?
To date, more than 1,000 practitioners have been tortured to death all over the country. Whoever has done evil deeds against Dafa and Dafa disciples will repay their debts in the near future. None of those who have committed evil deeds will be able to escape karmic retribution.
Notes:
(1) Leaning against a Big Board: The practitioner is forced to lie down on a bed made of a wooden board without any padding. His feet and hands are handcuffed tightly to the headboard of the bed.
(2) Holding and Squatting: The detainee is forced to squat on a squared floor brick measuring 30 by 30 cm [approximately 1 ft by 1 ft] for a long time. The head must be raised and the feet, the knees have to stay close to each other. As time goes by, if the detainee can't hold the two knees together, the police will tie the knees with a rope tightly and force the detainee to squat with knees tied up for a long time.
(Clearwisdom.net) My name is Xiaoyang Wang and I work at a food company in Japan. I have a Japanese husband and we live together with his mother. We have a happy family. From April 2001 to July 2002, however, the Chinese consulate at Osaka unreasonably withheld my passport because of my practice of Falun Dafa. The illegal action of the consulate brought my family and me great difficulties.
Origin of the Incident
In July 1999, I heard about Falun Dafa from a friend from China. At that time, I was not interested in Qigong; however, I was looking for answers in life and had read a lot of literature. I read Zhuan Falun (the main text of Falun Gong) continuously until I finished it. I was deeply amazed by the teachings, as so many questions of mine were answered at once! I felt so lucky to have found a way to Buddhahood and decided to cultivate all the way to Consummation.
The days that followed were the best time in my life. As I strove to live up to the principles of "Truthfulness, Compassion and Forbearance," my heart became more and more peaceful and compassionate. Everything truly happened naturally, and I experienced true happiness.
When Jiang's regime first launched the persecution, I only heard the news without knowing any details. It was not until October 1999 that I learned how severe the persecution was from internet. Every time I browsed the internet, I cried. I was also deeply touched by the pure compassion of Chinese practitioners, who continued to put others' interest first despite the persecution. I wanted to go back to China to tell my government: The persecution of Falun Gong is wrong. By the end of 1999, I heard that some Tokyo practitioners were planning to go to China to appeal, so, I joined them.
To our surprise, our appeal ended up in the Beijing Security Bureau even before we arrived at the Central Appeals Office. We were interrogated as if we were criminals and were forcefully deported after overnight detention. Since then, problems have come one after another because China added my name to its blacklist.
Chinese Consulate Withholds my Passport
When I came back to Japan, my husband suggested that I apply for Japanese citizenship so that I wouldn't be persecuted or harassed again. To obtain the citizenship, I needed a document verifying my Chinese nationality. On April 18, 2001, I went to the Chinese Consulate in Osaka to apply for such a document. After receiving my passport (see photo), a consulate officer gave me a card as a receipt to pick up my Chinese nationality certificate three days later.
Three days later, however, the consulate told me that my passport had some problems and asked me to go home to wait for further notice. I asked what happened. Officers in the consulate refused to answer. At that time, I sensed that it might have something to do with my appeal in Beijing. After one month, I still didn't get any notice from the consulate. During this period, I called the consulate several times and was hung up on every time before I finished my question.

Wang's passport
One month later, I went to the consulate again to request the nationality certificate. The consulate refused my request. When I asked why, they told me: "You know why." I said that I didn't know. They were very unreasonable and ordered me to leave. I said: "If you won't issue me the nationality certificate, please return my passport." They said that it was impossible. I said: "I didn't do anything wrong, why you would withhold my passport." They simply ignored me as if I didn't exist. From then on, I went to the consulate a few times and they always put me off with all kinds of excuse. Eventually, they refused to see me.
Because I didn't have a deep understanding of the Fa, I accepted the persecution passively. I felt that I couldn't do anything. Later, through Fa study and sharing with fellow practitioners, I realized that I shouldn't be led by evil and I should clarify the truth wherever there is a problem or tribulation. Since June 2002, I went back to the consulate again for my passport and the nationality certificate. I resigned from work and was determined to fight until I got my rights back. By that time, the consul who worked on my case had been replaced by another man, who also refused to see me. I then went to an office window to tell a receptionist that I hadn't done anything wrong, but the consulate was withholding my passport because of my practice of Falun Gong. If the consul in charge would not come out to see me, I wouldn't leave. The receptionist then called the consul out. The consul told me that he was busy and had no time to see me. I said: "This is your job, you have no reason not to see me." I told him that I had resigned from work and would stay at the consulate until my request was properly addressed.
He then started to talk with me. I told him how I learned Falun Dafa and the positive changes in my life because of Dafa, as well as how wrong the persecution is. One month later, he told me that he could issue me the nationality certificate. However, to satisfy his supervisors, he wanted me to write a warrant letter stating that I would not go against the Chinese government. I thought that I never wanted to go against Chinese government and we just wanted to help the government to realize its mistake, so there wasn't anything wrong with writing such a letter. So I wrote: "I was never against [Chinese] government, and I promise I will never go against the government." However, my conscience told me that it was wrong to do this, to comply with their demands of any type. Because of my attachment to the nationality certificate, I still wrote that letter. The Consulate in Osaka then returned my passport and issued me a Nationality Certificate on July 26, 2002. I obtained Japanese citizenship in April, 2003.
Later, I clearly realized that I had made a big mistake and was very regretful. I published a solemn statement on Clearwisdom.net on January 8, 2003 to declare that my words were null and void.
I have been striving to be a good person and better person by following the principles of Truthfulness, Compassion and Forbearance. However, the Chinese Consulate in Osaka persecuted me for this very reason. In more than one year, their persecution brought trouble, pressure and serious damage to my family and me.
Postscript
When fellow practitioners asked me to write down my experiences with the consulate, I didn't want to do it. Later, I asked myself, "If this a good thing that can expose evil and save sentient beings, why don't I want to do it?" I realized that it was the fear to lose face and to expose the stains in my cultivation. I realize that cultivation is solemn and I won't succeed with even a tiny bit of attachments. When I enlightened to this principle, I once again experienced the state of being selflessness.
Thank you, Master, for giving me another opportunity to purify myself.
(Clearwisdom.net) On the morning of July 13, 2004, a Falun Gong practitioner from North America was calling people in China to clarify the truth about Falun Gong and the persecution. When she randomly dialed a number in Wuhan City, Hubei Province, a man answered the phone. To her surprise, this man told her that his name was Ni Guobin, and that he was a Falun Gong practitioner as well. At that very moment, the police were at his residence trying to illegally abduct him, and he was resisting the persecution and clarifying the truth to the people watching nearby.
Six hours later however, Mr. Ni Guobin was arrested and taken away by the police. It is said that he is now being detained at Wuhan Second Detention Center.
Mr. Ni Guobin has a college degree, and is self-employed. He lives at Unit 103, Entrance One, Building 46, No. 3 Village of Changqing Garden, Dongxihu District, Wuhan City, Hubei Province. He had already been unlawfully jailed for three years for practicing Falun Gong. Now, not long after being released, he was abducted again. His wife was seven months pregnant, and his parents are in their seventies, and both suffer from high blood pressure. All his family members are shocked and distressed because of this incident.
It is reported that the persecution against Falun Gong practitioners in Dongxihu District is extremely severe. At present, there are 59 Falun Gong practitioners being detained at brainwashing centers. Many leading government officials in this area have been directly involved in the persecution against Falun Gong. These include Xiao Zuoyi, the Secretary of the Political and Judiciary Committee of Dongxihu District; Li Zhengdong, the Deputy Secretary; Lin Zhengxing, formerly the Director of the "610 Office" for three years and now Party Secretary of the Zoumaling Farm; Li Dengchun, formerly Party Secretary of the District Court, now retired; Qian Changlai, formerly the Director of the Department of Armed Force of Dongxihu District, then transferred to the District Political and Judiciary Committee, now the Director of the Environmental Sanitation Bureau, and Qiu Hanhua, Head of the First Division of Wuhan City Police Department. These people have all been directly involved in the persecution.
Besides the people listed above, there are more vicious perpetrators that include Feng Zhuanyun, the Chief of Section One of the Dongxihu District Police Department; Zhang Changfa, the former Deputy Chief; Liu Gongping, the Deputy Director of the Xincun Police Station, who often ransacks the homes of and abducts Falun Gong practitioners, and Li Xingfu, the current Director of the District "610 Office." Li Xingfu has issued many arrest orders that have resulted in a large number of Falun Gong practitioners suffering brutal persecution; he has an undeniable responsibility for the illegal abduction, detention and forced labor sentences of Falun Gong practitioners in the Dongxihu District. Wang Jianhua and Li Jinjie from the Dongxihu District brainwashing center have used methods such as torturing, brainwashing and physical punishment, force-feeding, humiliation, and ransacking Falun Gong practitioners' homes, all to force Falun Gong practitioners to give up their belief. They have also used other means, including applying pressure by involving family members and friends in a particular Falun Gong case, firing practitioners from their jobs and fining practitioners.

In early March 2001, when Falun Gong practitioner Mr. Xia Gang was making Falun Gong truth-clarification materials with others, the police from Division One of the Wuhan City Police Department abducted him. They sent him to the Wuhan City Hewan Forced Labor Camp on April 30, 2001. During the detention, Mr. Xia was tortured severely and he became extremely weak. In June 2001 he was released under "medical parole." On October 16, 2001, Xia Gang died as a result of the torture.
Schoolteachers Ms. Li Zhi and Ms. He Yan from Wujiashan Fourth Middle School went to Beijing to appeal for Falun Gong, but they were arrested and sent back to their hometown. The school principal had cooperated with the "610 Office" and illegally detained them in the school several times, and had also sent them to brainwashing centers. Because Ms. Li and Ms. He wouldn't give up their belief in Falun Dafa, the school authority stopped their paychecks for a long term. Ms. Li Zhi had started practicing Falun Dafa in March 1999, and had greatly benefited from the practice both mentally and physically. She was very firm in her belief. Her husband, who is an official in the labor bureau, cooperated with the "610 Office" and often beat her up in an attempt to force her to stop practicing Falun Dafa. He used a bench to beat her and hit her so hard that the bench broke. Ms. Li Zhi was often beaten to the point that she had to just curl up on the floor and wait for him to become exhausted so that he would stop beating her. Her body was always covered with large bruises. Her husband did not stop beating her until she eventually became very sick and was taken to the hospital. Ms. Li Zhi died in the hospital in the summer of 2002.
Practitioner Ms. Wang owned a small shoeshine business at Chengjiashan, where she was temporarily living. In July 2001, while she was clarifying the truth on the street, the police from Section One of the Police Department abducted her and sent her to Wuhan City No.1 Female Detention Center. In the detention center, Ms. Wang was severely beaten by the police and as a result she suffered a severe mental collapse. Her husband had been laid off from his job for a long time and had no income. She needed to support her husband and three school-aged children by running that small shoeshine business. But now the severe persecution has kept her from supplying even their most basic necessities.
Illegally detained Falun Gong practitioners from Dongxihu District include Bao Huarong, Granny Cao, Chen Feng, Chen Yantang, Feng Xiulan, Feng Yuqin, He Yan, Hu Jiancheng, Hu Wangxiang, Hu Yaping, Huang Hongying, Huang Lihua, Huang Liuyan, Ms. Jiang from the District Water Board, Ms. Jiang (temporary resident of Chengjiashan), Li Aimin, Li Chihua, Li Chihua, Li Jinxiang, Li Keming, Granny Li, Li Xiantao, Li Xianfang, Liu Juying, Liu Lu, Lu Yalin, Lu Yalin's grandma, Nie Xuelan, Shi Binglian, Si Sulan, Tan Li, Wang Changzheng, Wang Suoxian, Wang Dashuang, Wang Dashuang's spouse, Wang Dashuang's younger brother, Wang Dashuang's father, Wang Guoqiang, Wang Jin, Wei Liuzhen, Xiao Gaopan, Yang Lingli, Yu Lantao, Zhang Baodong, Zhang Dakui, Zhang Lidang, Zhang Shuliang, Zhang Xihou, Zhou Mingchang, Zhou Yufen, Zhu Hongbao, Zou Shuangfen and others.

(Clearwisdom.net) Meng Xianjun, 30, from Shuangcheng City in Heilongjiang Province, used to work in the Water and Sewage Administration Sector for Shuangcheng City. She started to practice Falun Gong in 1998. Since Jiang Zemin's regime commenced persecuting Dafa in July 1999, Meng Xianjun has gone to Beijing three times to appeal for Falun Dafa. She suffered cruel persecution from Beijing and local police. Her family was extorted out of about 30,000 Yuan.
Meng Xianjun went to Beijing to appeal for the first time on November 9, 2000. She unfurled a banner saying, "Falun Dafa is Great" at Tiananmen Square. The police took her to the Tiananmen Square Police Station. At first she was detained in a steel cage, and then she was interrogated. After divulging her name and address, she was sent to Shuangcheng City's Beijing liaison office and was detained there for 24 hours. Jiang Shihui and others from that office searched the Dafa practitioners' bodies and took all their money. They said the money was for a "boarding fee." Some practitioners were robbed of over a hundred Yuan. The next day, the manager from her workplace took Meng Xianjun back to the local "610 Office," where one of the heads of the "610 Office," Zhang Shiyue (now transferred), interrogated her. He also brought out a printed document and forced her to sign it. Then they extorted 2,000 Yuan from her family before releasing her.
Back home, Meng Xianjun felt remorse towards Dafa and Master, from whom she benefited so much. She went to Beijing to appeal again on December 12, 2000. This time she was taken to Tiananmen Square Police Station. Because she didn't tell them her name and address, she was sent to Fangshan District Detention Center in Beijing. There were so many Dafa practitioners there, and they were each given a number and were taken to different rooms for interrogation.
Two male police officers took Meng Xianjun to a room that had a bunk bed. After entering the room, the officers immediately cuffed her to a modified metal chair, a torture device. Such a chair has a square shape and is as high as a half meter (about 18 inches). When sitting on it, one was cuffed with both hands behind them in an immovable position. There were two steel rings just a little bit wider than an ankle, to shackle the legs. One could not move at all except for a little bit in the head and shoulders. After four or five hours fixed in this position, a normal person's arms might be permanently disabled. The ankles might also swell; after a long time the rings would cut into the flesh, thus leading to potentially serious atrophy of the calf muscles. In the worse cases, it might lead to permanent disability of the lower legs.
The police started to interrogate Meng Xianjun at around 7:00 p.m. The TV showed pictures of Jiang Zemin. One of the police officers said, "It is him who told us to do this." These two officers kept her restrained until 8:00 a.m. the next morning - for 13 hours! After they came to work, they sent her back to the cell in the detention center. Meng Xianjun refused to tell them her name and address. She went on a hunger strike from the moment of her illegal interrogation. Her body was already very weak by then, and after three days, they saw that she was dying, and were afraid to take responsibility for her death, so they released her. With the help of kind people, Meng Xianjun finally went back home.
The third time she went to Beijing to appeal was on December 18, 2000. She was arrested and taken to Daxing District Detention Center in Beijing, where two police officers in their 40s interrogated her initially. Because she didn't tell her name, she was punished by being made to stand for 24 hours. Her legs became numb. The next day, a young but vicious-looking police officer came in and shouted at her, "Take off your shoes, squat by the wall, stretch your arms forward, stand on your heels and don't move." This is a very cruel way to torture people. This torture does not show bruises on the surface. After a prolonged time, it can cause leg spasms, swelling of the feet, and can even cause one to lose equilibrium and consciousness.
Even a small body movement would trigger this police officer to kick her body and head with leather boots. After a while, seeing her persistence to not divulge her name, the officer changed tactics and said, "If you tell us, we can explain to the directors. Then we'll buy you a return train ticket home." She was in so much pain by then that she could barely stand it. So she told her name. To her surprise, they had lied to her. Later she was put into a detention center, and the next day she was taken back by a clerk from the liaison office. Several days later, she was taken back by the managers at her workplace, taken to Shuangcheng City, and directly sent to the Shuangcheng City No. 2 Detention Center.
After eight days of hunger strike in the detention center, she was released on December 31. The detention center extorted over 130 Yuan as a "boarding fee." On February 15, 2001, shortly after she had returned home, the city "610 Office" head, Zhang Guofu (deputy chief of Shuangcheng City Police Department), sent two people to dupe Meng Xianjun into going to the detention center "for a conversation." There she was held for 37 days of unlawful detention. This time they extorted over 300 Yuan as a "boarding fee." During this time, Zhang Guofu also threatened her parents that he would send her to a forced labor camp. Meng Xianjun's parents were worried that she might suffer more, so they paid another bribe of 5,000 Yuan.
On March 7, 2003, Meng Xianjun and fellow practitioners went to distribute truth-clarifying materials in the countryside. Chief Xin Peiyan and two officers from Shuangcheng City Gongzheng Town Police Station arrested them and restricted their personal freedom for the entire morning. The practitioners were then sent to Shuangcheng City No. 2 Detention Center. Meng Xianjun went on hunger strike again, to protest this persecution. After eight days, on March 14, she was "bailed out awaiting trial." The No. 2 Detention Center extorted a 3,000 Yuan "bail out fee."
One day in May 2003, personnel from the Gongzheng Town Police Station suddenly appeared at Meng Xianjun's home. They delivered a document that looked like a notification for forced labor, and told her to come to the "610 Office" the next day. Meng Xianjun's parents were anxious as soon as they saw the document. How come she had to do forced labor again? Later they understood. It turned out that Gongzheng Town Police Station enforcers arrested her but didn't get any credit for it. Instead, the No. 2 Detention Center got 3,000 Yuan, so they felt unhappy inside, not getting their fair share. Meng Xianjun's parents had to borrow money from here and there. They gave 10,000 Yuan to Zhang Guofu from the "610 Office" and 4,000 Yuan to Xin Peiyan from Gongzheng Town Police Station. By this time her family had many debts accumulated. Meng Xianjun was arrested three times, and she and her family had been extorted over 24,500 Yuan. This does not include the transportation fee that her manager demanded for taking her back, which was about 5,000 Yuan!
Meng Xianjun not only suffered tremendous physical and mental torment, but also her family, especially her parents, suffered unimaginable mental pressure. They often had nightmares. A phone ringing easily scared them. When she was at home, her parents always followed her in fear that the police would take her away at any time.
(Clearwisdom.net) On March 14, 2004, the No. 7 brigade leader Sun Fengjun (badge # 3731211) grabbed Falun Dafa practitioner Mr. Du Yihe's head and smashed it against the wall for no apparent reason. Sun Fenjun is a policeman well known for his cruelty and is stationed at the No. 2 Forced Labor Camp in Shandong Province.
On April 4 and 5 of 2004, Mr. Yan Shulu was dragged to the back of the office, handcuffed and beaten by a group of policemen because he persisted on practicing the Falun Dafa exercises. The policemen involved were No. 7 brigade leader Qing Xusheng (badge #: 3731210), Zhang Tao (badge #: 3731221), and police officer with the surname of Feng (badge #: 3731254). Two of the officers violently dragged Mr. Yan by the arms when he was still handcuffed, while the third policeman continuously stuck his face.
In May 2004, Mr. Sun Haidong suffered brutal beatings from brigade leader Qing Xusheng because he openly declared he would continue to practice Falun Gong. Mr. Sun did not renounce his belief while being subjected to the beatings, but loudly shouted, "Falun Dafa is good!" For that, his hands and other parts of his body were shocked with electric batons.
On May 27 and 28, police officer Song Nan (badge #: 3731122) from the No. 7 brigade shocked practitioner Mr. Du Zhi's hands with electric batons until they were severely swollen. Also, the back of his hands developed large blisters that were so painful that he could not use his hands for his daily necessities such as eating or using the toilet.
On July 1, 2004, the labor camp again organized a so-called "intensive transformation group" in order to intensify the persecution against the detained practitioners. The labor camp adopted even crueler methods to torture practitioners, which included sleep deprivation, verbal abuse, beatings and other brutal methods to force practitioners to renounce their belief. Practitioners Du Zhi, Che Qicong, and others are currently being subjected to severe persecution.
In June of 2004, Yan Shulu was transferred to the "strict enforcement room" because he persisted in practicing the Falun Dafa exercises. The room, which is similar to a dungeon, is in the basement of No. 2 Forced Labor Camp. Still, Yan continued to practice the exercises. When he was brought back to the cell, fellow practitioner Du Yihe saw Yan's condition, and immediately went on a hunger strike to protest the inhumane persecution. Shortly after going on a hunger strike, Du Yihe suffered from force-feeding. Before this incident, the forced labor camp only gave the two practitioners one or two corn cakes every meal and no protein in their diet. The corn cakes contained very little nutritional value.
Practitioners detained at the No. 2 Forced Labor Camp in Shandong Province are forced to do hard labor regardless of their age. Beginning June 28, they have been given only half hour lunch breaks. However, many in some brigades are not given any break time during lunch. But when preparing the monthly report, the police always lie and record that Sundays and holidays are rest days for practitioners, when in fact they never get a day of rest. The police fear their brutal persecution of Dafa practitioners will be exposed and go to great lengths to cover up the truth.
Currently all the practitioners illegally detained at the forced labor camp have the courage to shout, "Falun Dafa is good!" For that, the police have been depriving the practitioners of sleep, and punching and kicking them. A policeman from the No. 7 brigade, Gao Wei, beat up practitioner Qin Zhenquan because he courageously shouted, "Falun Dafa is good!"
(Clearwisdom.net) The fifty-sixth session of the Sub-Commission on the Promotion and Protection of Human Rights was held this year from 26 July to 13 August at the Palais des Nations, Geneva. On 6 August, a Falun Gong practitioner gave a speech at a plenary session on the subject of contemporary forms of slavery. Below is a transcript of the speech.
Plenary session
Item 6: Specific human rights issues:
(b) Contemporary forms of slavery
Mr Chairperson, Ladies and Gentlemen,
I speak on behalf of the Association of World Citizens and thank you for giving us the floor.
In February 2004, we, along with other international human rights organizations, the World Trade Organization, its member States and the foremost industrial countries, received a heart-rending and shocking letter written by Falun Gong practitioners who had survived the Chinese forced labour camps. They worked like slaves, under continuous torture and persecution, solely because they practise this method of Qigong and cultivate the human values of truth/authenticity, benevolence and tolerance.
They had been sent without trial into these camps through the total eradication campaign led by former President Jiang Zemin since July 1999 and they tell us what happens daily and why the products made in China are so inexpensive.
Working conditions are so inhumane that they may be defined as slavery:
If their quotas are not fulfilled, the detainees are punished, tortured, or their time in detention is extended. Corruption is rife: the richest detainees bribe the warders to get easier working conditions and more food.
ZHANG Cuiying, famous Australian painter, who filed a complaint at Easter, 2004 with the various authorities of the United Nations against the responsible Chinese officials, spent eight months in a prison in Shenzen, because she practises Falun Gong: "I had to produce from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. electric candles to be sold in Hong Kong. I was often beaten, electrocuted, sexually abused by the warders, locked in with criminals and the mentally ill. Millions of people undergo a similar fate in China."
CHEN Ying, a student in France, was arrested for the same reason when she was visiting her family in Beijing. She underwent sleep deprivation and brainwashing. They injected a drug into her as a result of which the left side of her body is still half paralysed. In the camp she made soft-toy rabbits for Nestle.
According to the estimates of the Research Foundation on the Laogai (forced labour camps), there are actually 6.8 million people imprisoned in 1,100 labour camps in China. Among the prisoners are common criminals, dissidents, journalists, prostitutes, Christians and many Falun Gong practitioners: an enormous gratuitous workforce.
Major consumer goods are produced: jumpers, clothes, soft-toy animals, toys, footballs, tablecloths and towels, sheets and embroidered cushions, jewels, wigs, Christmas trees, shoes, belts, wallets, mobile phone cases, tools, food, etc. Most of these products are for export.
The forced labour camps have no production costs, pay no salaries and are exempt from tax for the finished products. They build up around themselves vast economic zones that benefit from these advantageous conditions.
For each detainee sent to a forced labour camp the Public Security offices receive 1,500 Yuan (the average monthly wage is 500 yuans).
This system equates to veritable economic slavery set up and maintained by the Chinese Government. It violates the Chinese Constitution and international laws such as International Labour Organization Conventions Nos. 29 and 105. It encourages corruption, torture and organized crime (for 570 cases of death from torture in the camps, 24 per cent were Falun Gong practitioners).
According to the Research Foundation on the Laogai, the Chinese Government guaranteed publicly in October 2001 an end to the export of products made from forced labour.
We thank the Sub-Commission for the work accomplished on the subject of international norms and request that maximum effort continue to be made to verify the origin of products and so that all forced labour camps can be closed.
Mr Chairperson, Ladies and Gentlemen, we thank you for your attention.
Mr. Chairman, Ladies and gentlemen:

I wish to thank Institute of Religion and Public Policy for organizing this important conference and for giving me this opportunity to speak about the Falun Gong spiritual movement and its plight in Communist China. As you may know, the Chinese regime's persecution against Falun Gong has gone on for over five years. For those who have had to face it, the repression has been relentless, violent, and systematic.
Falun Gong is a traditional Chinese way of life. As a meditation system, it was first introduced to the public in 1992 by Mr. Li Hongzhi. This meditation includes five sets of gentle-moving exercises, which harness and purify one's energy so that it is in harmony; the teaching is free and its activities voluntary. Several clinical studies by the Government have reported that routine exercise of Falun Gong is beneficial to health. According to these reports, the healing rate for most diseases reached as high as 95%.
The U.S. News and World Report ran a story in February 1999, in which an official from the China Sports Commission said, "Falun Gong and other types of qi gong can save each person 1,000 Yuan in annual medical fees. If 100 million people are practicing it, that's 100 billion Yuan saved per year in medical fees. Premier Zhu Rongji is very happy about that. The country could use the money right now." That comes out to more than ten billion U.S. dollars a year -- no small sum.
In 1998, the Chinese Government statistics showed that there were 70 to 100 million people practicing Falun Gong. Its practitioners were from all walks of life, all ages, and of all geographic areas. Until July 1999, the Chinese Government had been promoting Falun Gong for 7 years and credited it for its "health benefits and contribution to society with high moral virtues." As a result, the Chinese Government had issued numerous certificates of honor to Falun Gong and to its founder.
Another aspect, and perhaps the most important element, of Falun Gong is its spiritual component--the principles of Truthfulness, Compassion, and Forbearance. In persecuting Falun Gong, the Communist Party is also hacking away at thousands of years of Chinese intellectual history. In these principles of Falun Gong, we can hear the "Zhen" or Truthfulness of Lao Tzu, founder of Taoism, and the "Shan" or Compassion from Buddhism, and "Ren" or Forbearance taught by Confucius. We can hear thousands of years of Chinese way of life and spiritual thought in the ideas of the union of mind and body, karma and virtue, and how the spirit continues on after death. These are not new ideas; they are ideas that have permeated the Chinese culture, and indeed many other cultures, for as long as anyone can remember. These are the ideas that form the bedrock of human faith. Just because these ideas have been suppressed in China for the past 50 years doesn't mean that they have not stood, or will not stand, the test of time. In fact, the principles of Truthfulness, Compassion, and Forbearance embedded in Falun Gong represent the essence of Chinese culture. Dr. Franz Susman, Professor for Catholic Church History in Austria, has noted: "Just like the most successful group of philosophers 2,000 years ago -- the Buddhist-Pythagorean Essences -- the Falun Gong movement today is the biggest hope of mankind, because the teachings and life are in harmony."
Yet, the rapid growing popularity of Falun Gong made Jiang Zemin, former China's President, feel threatened, as the 100 million Falun Gong practitioners had outnumbered the Communist Party membership (estimated around 40 million at that time). In addition, over the past 50 years, the Communist ideology, which was imported from the former Soviet Union, has always been clashing with the traditional Chinese culture and values. For example, the Cultural Revolution in the 1960s destroyed virtually all Buddhist temples, churches, and cultural relics; the political campaign against Confucius in the 1970s denounced classic Chinese philosophers; and now this persecution of Falun Gong in 1999 began the worse nightmare for the Chinese people, because their hope to return to their cultural roots was once again trampled upon. Such systematic crackdowns have always been brutal and violent. Jiang Zemin feared that the revival of the traditional Chinese culture such as Falun Gong would undermine the atheist Communist dictatorship.
Every era has its defining moments, its defining movements. I believe that the Falun Gong issue in China is precisely one of those issues that will affect the legacy of mankind today. Amnesty International's Asia-Pacific Advocacy Director, T. Kumar, said: "Tens and thousands of Falun Gong members were arrested by the Chinese purely because they were practicing their own belief. These are the people who are ordinary citizens of China. They never harmed anyone... they are not criminals.... It's shocking to see that China can get away with this for the past one year... arresting, imprisoning, torturing and harassing even the people who speak out against these crackdowns."
Human rights groups have reported that over 100,000 people have been sent to labor re-education camps without trial, at least 1,000 have been given harsh jail sentences of up to 18 years, and more than 1,000 persons have died due to torture in police custody. And these are only the cases that have been reported and confirmed.
But the numbers don't tell the whole story. There are countless eyewitness accounts of the tortures and humiliations that practitioners have been subject to over the past year while behind closed doors in detention camps. Police are using some of the most inhumane tortures, such as sticking bamboo slivers under the fingernails and the device known as "Dilao", whereby prisoners are chained down in the most excruciating positions. They have sent over 1,000 completely healthy, normal people into mental institutions, where they keep the practitioners quiet by injecting them with nerve-damaging drugs and sedatives.
Women have been particularly targeted in this campaign of persecution. For example, pregnant women have been subjected to forced late-stage abortion, as late as 8 months pregnancy, rather than be released from jail to give birth to their child. In police or government custody, female practitioners have suffered from a variety of sexual assaults, such as being stripped naked and thrown into jail cells with male criminals, widespread use of electric stun devices to penetrate and shock genitalia, rape, and gang rape.
Yet the Falun Gong practitioners in China are still holding strong. Apart from their amazing stamina, what is remarkable about this whole situation is that the practitioners have maintained a stance of non-violence throughout -- they simply don't fight back. They know that one cannot fight evil with evil. Scholars have noted that never has China seen such a sustained and peaceful resistance in all its years of history. And all these people want to tell the Government is that Falun Gong is a great Chinese cultural heritage, and that the Government should not deny their constitutional right to freedom of conscience, expression, and association.
Spiritual faith is an anchor when everything else turns murky and the currents are pulling everyone in every direction. China today needs nothing more than it needs moral values and a sense of meaning in life that goes beyond the material, and that, I think we all agree, is something that the Chinese Communist dictatorship is not providing.
To justify its human rights violations, China tries to portray Falun Gong as a "cult" and a "controversial" issue. But in reality, Falun Gong is a moral issue, and an issue to protect ancient Chinese cultural heritage. This is also about human dignity -- about protecting individual's right to freedom of conscience, expression, and association. Time and time again in history, we have seen that to not stand up to evil is to betray the good, and that injustice for one is injustice for all.
Falun Gong practitioners around the world have sued the man who is responsible for this bloodshed -- the dictator of China, Jiang Zemin -- for torture, genocide, and crimes against humanity. At the current time, lawsuits around the world have been a real deterrent for those carrying out Jiang's orders and have seemed to help prevent some incidents of torture and abuse inside Mainland China.
The Chinese regime claims its human rights record is improving and they try to prove that by playing the game of hostage diplomacy with the international community, releasing a dissident here, another there. Let us not be fooled. We must see through the insidious nature of this persecution. The mind control and methods of indoctrination and brainwashing are no less terrifying than those depicted in George Orwell's classic depiction of Communism, 1984. The filth, the pain, the screams are all real.
There are brave individuals who have defied this evil system. Chinese army Dr. Jiang Yanyong risked his life in telling the true stories of SARS to the foreign press last year. And US citizen Dr. Charles Li is now serving a 3-year sentence in a Chinese jail for the "crime" of intending to expose the persecution of Falun Gong in China. A Shanghai-based US Consulate official said that Dr. Li has been physically tortured, forced to attend brainwashing classes, and do forced labor in jail.
Genocide doesn't merely depend on the number of people who are killed -- it depends on an intent and a system to exterminate a group of people. Jiang Zemin has expressed that intent since 1999 and he has set up a vast network of operatives and media and police to do his bidding. On the surface, things may seem calm and business as usual in Chinese society, but the truth is, the lives of millions of Chinese men, women, and children are being destroyed right before our very eyes. Every time an employee is fired from his job for his beliefs, every time a neighbor turns in a Falun Gong practitioner to the police, every time a child is forced by his teachers to denounce Falun Gong so that he may stay in school, the society becomes that much more corrupt and rotten. There are few in China who has not been affected by this persecution in some way.
The world has already spoken out against China's brutal persecution of Falun Gong. Members of democratic society have condemned China's brutal persecution of Falun Gong. The U.S. Congress and the European Parliament, for example, have specifically passed resolutions calling on China to stop the persecution of Falun Gong and supporting the human rights of Falun Gong.
We appreciate very much the kind support over the past five years from the international community, including from many governments and NGOs such as Amnesty International. We hope that participants at this conference will also lend your support and help stop this modern-day atrocity in China.
Today, I will end with this thought -- that regardless of how difficult things may be, every time a person decides to stand up for what is right, no matter what the consequences, that person brings in courage and light. That may ultimately be the best weapon against evil and darkness that we can all carry with us in our hearts at all times.
Thank you very much.

(Clearwisdom.net) On August 7 and 8, practitioners held several anti-torture exhibitions in Manhattan to clarify the truth to local residents and tourists. We participated in the activity at South Street Port and witnessed many touching stories.
The Anti-torture Exhibitions Deeply Touch Peoples' Hearts

Because a number of activities, including a youth basketball tournament, were taking place at the South Street Port region, there were huge crowds of people. Most people who saw our anti-torture exhibition and heard the practitioners' introduction of the 5-year and still on-going persecution were shocked. They expressed their outrage over the Jiang regime's brutal persecution of Falun Gong and their sympathy and support to practitioners.
A gentleman said that he came from Romania, and Romanians also experienced brutal persecution in the past. However, it is over now, he believed that practitioners would regain their right to practice Falun Gong freely in the near future. A lady said that her husband still can't go back to Cuba for fear of persecution. She could understand the practitioners' difficult situation and expressed her wish that the persecution would end as soon as possible.
Kind-hearted People Extend Support to Practitioners
After viewing the anti-torture exhibition, many people asked the same question: How can we help you? When we invited them to sign a petition calling on the Chinese authorities to end this persecution immediately, several hundred people signed. The booth facing our exhibition belongs to a souvenir vendor named David. At the beginning, he was worried that our activity would disturb his business. After he learned of the persecution, he started to help us to distribute fliers. On the afternoon of August 8 (Sunday) when we were about to go back to Toronto, he shook our hands and wished us luck.
Practitioners' Enthusiastic Participation

Practitioners from Greater New York, Taiwan, Toronto and Montreal participated in the truth-clarifying event in South Street Port. Very naturally, we formed one body and helped each other to make the event successful. Some acted as real-life models, some distributed fliers, and others demonstrated the exercises. The result was very good. The real-life models stayed in the baking sun for several hours--it was a touching scene.
When we have many practitioners at one site, some can go to nearby streets to distribute fliers to reach more people.
(Clearwisdom.net) A four year old girl named Fadu, who is an Australian of Chinese decent, has traveled to 38 countries with her mother. They want the world's people to know that because of practicing Falun Gong, her father was tortured to death 3 years ago in China. On July 29, 2004, Fadu and her mother visited the Liberty Bell in Philadelphia. This was their first visit to this place. They told people about their grief and about the protests they have undertaken concerning the persecution of Falun Gong in China.

Immediately after arriving by bus from New York, in Philadelphia, Fadu and her mother called the biggest local newspaper, the Metro, and the Philadelphia Inquirer, another local newspaper. The editor of the Metro news department agreed to talk to them. The next day, their picture was shown in the newspaper. Also, on July 29, 2004, a local radio station reporter from KYW Newsradio 1060 interviewed the little girl and her mother at Independence Mall. He said, "A little girl has joined with local protesters to campaign against the persecution of Falun Gong practitioners."
When Fadu was only 15 months old, her mother Dai Zhizhen found news on the Internet about her husband's death. It was difficult for her to hear that his body was already decomposing. She recalled, "After I read this news, I was in shock. I trembled and was unable to speak a word. My heart was broken. I shut myself inside a room, refusing to see anyone. By the next morning my hair had turned gray. I can't describe the pain I felt." Soon after Chen's death, Chen's sister, who went to pick up her brother's body, was also sent to a forced labor camp. Unable to bear the sorrow, Chen's elderly father passed away. With her daughter in her arms, Dai Zhizhen traveled from place to place, asking many people for help. Finally, after 8 months, due to intervention by the Australian government, she obtained her husband's ashes.
Clearwisdom.net reported that Jiang Zemin began to persecute Falun Gong 5 years ago. Since then, at least 1,000 Falun Gong practitioners have died as a result of the persecution. At present, Jiang and the head of the "610 Office" have been sued in many countries, including in the US, Belgium, Germany, Spain, and Finland. Dai Zhizhen is one of plaintiffs.
Fadu loves to sing. She sang a song named "Coming for you:"
Coming from far away,
Again and again, I came for you,
I came for loving you
Precious Chinese people,
Please listen to my heart-felt voice,
Falun Dafa's great, oh Falun Dafa Hao!
See the truth behind those lies.
On the evening of July 29, 2004, Dai and her daughter boarded another plane. This time they are on their way to Spain, continuing their trip around the world.
Below is a portion of an interview with Dai Zhizhen:
Reporter: Can you tell us your feelings about coming to the Liberty Bell?
Dai: The Liberty Bell represents freedom and democracy. My entire family practices Falun Gong and believes in "Truthfulness, Compassion, Tolerance." Because of our belief, my husband was tortured to death. Right now, millions of Falun Gong practitioners in China are still suffering under the persecution. They lost their freedom of speech. My daughter and I survived because we have Australian passports; I cherish this freedom very much.
Reporter: You are one of the plaintiffs in the lawsuit against Jiang. Some people think the lawsuit won't help the situation. What do you think?
Dai: I think the lawsuit is very helpful. Many famous lawyers are participating in the lawsuit. The Jiang regime is very much afraid now. Last month, my good friend David Liang was shot in the feet in South Africa, resulting in serious injuries. David helped me when I was suffering the most. He was an invaluable help when we were trying to obtain my husband's ashes. The Chinese consulate in Australia refused to grant me a visa. David drove us from Sydney to Canberra so that I could talk with Australian government officials. We spent 6 hours on the road. Eight months later, the Australian government brought my husband's ashes to me. After I heard the news that David was shot in the feet, I went to South Africa with my daughter to help stop the terrorism. The "State Terrorism" of Jiang's regime has extended overseas. If no one tries to stop it, who knows what will happen next? I hope no one else has to bear the pain of losing his or her loved ones. Why did the Jiang regime commit such a crime? They are afraid of the lawsuit. We have filed lawsuits against Jiang and his followers in many countries, including the US, Belgium, Germany, Spain, and Finland. Zeng Qinghong is the Vice President of China. We wanted to sue him during his visit to South Africa. We believe he hired the gunman and tried to kill the practitioners. These actions indicate clearly that they are scared of such lawsuits. I think the lawsuit is very important.
Reporter: Some people think that by filing such lawsuits, you have yourself involved in politics. Can you please share your thoughts about such assumptions?
Dai: Politicians all have political goals, but we don't. As long as we can read Dafa books at home and practice in the park, we will not need to be involved in such activities. These are basic human rights, yet in China, one will be arrested and taken to brainwashing centers, forced labor camps, or even mental hospitals for reading Dafa books and practicing the exercises. The persecutors use brutal torture methods to stop people from practicing Falun Gong. They try very hard, as they want practitioners to renounce their belief. The purpose of brainwashing is to kill someone spiritually. Why did my husband refuse to give up his belief, even at the last moment of life? "Truthfulness, Compassion, Forbearance" is in our blood, and it cannot be taken away from us through external means. Although my husband left this world, his spirit will live on. My daughter and I travel to every corner of the world, telling people that "Truthfulness, Compassion, Forbearance" cannot be abolished. Christians were persecuted for 300 years, yet the belief still exists today.
Reporter: Are there families with similar experiences in China?
Dai: Many families experienced a lot more sufferings than we did. I often tell my daughter: you are very lucky to have a mother who lives in Australia. In China, many children lost their parents. No one takes care of them; many people don't know about their tragic situation.
Reporter: It is very difficult for you to travel around the world with your young daughter. What do you find most difficult?
Dai: The most difficult thing in my travels is the interference by the special agents in China. They have tried all kinds of methods to stop me. In March 2004, my mother died. She had suffered a lot. The special agents tapped into her phone, and agents from the "610 Office" harassed her constantly. They tried to stop me from telling people the truth by harassing my mother. My mother's biggest suffering was to live through my husband's death. She could feel my suffering, too. Her last wish was to see my daughter one more time -- she had seen my daughter only once. All the letters I had sent her were confiscated before they could reach her, so she could not even see our pictures. Because she wanted to see us for a last time, we tried to get visas from the Chinese Consulate. Yet the Chinese consulate refused our application, using that as a punishment for our speaking the truth. At the time, my daughter asked me: "Why can't we go back to China?" I said, "Because we don't have a visa." "Why can't we obtain the visa?" "Because we practice Falun Gong." "How come Falun Gong practitioners cannot get visa?" I started to cry, I don't know how to explain this to her. This is where I suffer most. I don't know how the terrorism will affect her whole life. Millions of children in China are suffering from the pain of losing their loved ones and there are so many broken families.
Reporter: In China, those who persecute Falun Gong practitioners are now poisoning the minds of children. They are visiting middle and primary schools and give speeches there slandering Falun Gong. What are your thoughts regarding that?
Dai: I want to tell the children in China that I love China and that I love the Chinese culture, the Chinese people, as well as the mountains and rivers. My greatest hope is that you don't believe those lies. Falun Gong is legal in over 60 countries, and Dafa's goodness has spread to every corner of the world. One day, we will come back to China.
Reporter: You have traveled to so many countries, and you have to face many difficulties and pressure. What has helped you to persist in this cause?
Dai: Falun Dafa! I traveled many places until I finally found the book Zhuan Falun. I grew up during the Cultural Revolution. My mother was suffering a lot at that time, she always wept at home. So I was determined not to repeat my mother's life. I tried very hard in pursuing my goals, and I have succeeded: I went to college when I was 17. During my 4 years in college I read many books, yet I could not find what I was looking for. After college, I worked in a hotel in Guangzhou City. In 1987, I went to Australia, where I continued my search for another 6 years. I searched in western cultures for the truth. Between 1992 and 1997, I traveled throughout the world searching and seeking. I visited many museums and art exhibitions. One day when I arrived in Hawaii, I looked at the beautiful beach and began to cry. That is when I realized that my western life style had come to an end. I decided to go back to China. On April 18, 1997, my mother and I visited a relative in China, and I saw at her house the book Zhuan Falun. My searched had ended. I found all the answers I was trying so hard to find inside this book. The book changed my life. Before, I was a very selfish person: I focused solely on my dreams and my career. I did not think about other people and did not trust other people. I held no thoughts of being a mother. I told myself "why do I want to bring a life into this meaningless place?" After I started to cultivate Dafa, I became a mother, and now I want to help all children of the world.
Reporter: What is your biggest wish now?
Dai: To stop the torture and killing, and stop the Jiang regime's state terrorism from spreading overseas.
(Clearwisdom.net) In order to inform the Hungarian people about Falun Dafa and to appeal for an end to the persecution of practitioners in China, some practitioners from Sweden, Australia and Taiwan went to Budapest, the capital of Hungary, on the 21st and 22nd of June.
A peaceful appeal was held outside the Chinese Embassy in Budapest. Leaflets were given out to passers-by. The Hungarian people were very supportive and one man said loudly to us, "My heart is with you!"
The policeman on duty outside the Chinese Embassy became very curious and wanted to know more about Falun Gong. He asked for the address of our local practice site where he can learn the exercises for free and said that he would like to come along.
One staff member from the Chinese Embassy came out and took some photos of us, but this did not stop us from talking to people about the persecution in China, including the embassy staff.

(Clearwisdom.net) On the 4th of August 2004, Falun Gong practitioners gathered at Moscow's marketplace, where Chinese people are the primary ethnic group, and later appealed against Chinese dictator Jiang Zemin's brutal persecution of Falun Gong practitioners outside the Chinese Embassy. There were also protests against Jiang's accomplice Bo Xilai visiting Moscow. Falun Gong practitioners from places in Russia, Ukraine and Latvia held an exhibition entitled, "The Persecution Happening to Falun Gong Practitioners -- Picture Exhibition and Simulations of Torture". The Moscow Government officially permitted this activity.

Protesting Bo Xilai's visit to Russia outside the Chinese Embassy at Moscow
At the market, there are a few thousand Chinese business people, and many of them had been deeply poisoned by the Jiang regime's deceitful and slanderous propaganda. On the only path from the underground station to the market place, practitioners put up posters introducing Falun Dafa and set up live simulations of all kinds of torture used by the Jiang regime to persecute people who practise Falun Gong in China. The banners read, "Truthfulness Compassion Tolerance", "Falun Dafa is Good", "More than 1000 Falun Dafa practitioners have been persecuted to death in China", "Bring Jiang Zemin and his Accomplices to Justice" and "We Demand the End of the Persecution in China".
Hundreds of Chinese and Russian people passed by. A megaphone was used to tell people about Falun Dafa and the illegal persecution that's happening to practitioners in China. Some practitioners sent forth righteous thoughts and others demonstrated the five sets of Falun Gong exercises. Practitioners talked about the persecution to Chinese and Russian people who passed by; lots of leaflets and paper lotus flowers with "Falun Dafa is Good" written on them were given out. Many Chinese people asked all kinds of questions, and practitioners talked to them with a benevolent and peaceful heart. This activity allowed lots of people to hear about Falun Gong and the persecution in China.
Originally Bo Xilai planned to come to this market on the 4th of August but he changed his plans. On the same day, Falun Gong practitioners from Moscow, St. Petersburg and Ukraine held a banner reading "Bring the Main Murderers of Falun Gong Practitioners in China to Justice" in front of the Chinese Embassy, protesting against Jiang Zemin's accomplice Bo Xilai visiting Moscow.

(Clearwisdom.net) Practitioners of Falun Gong visited several cities in Eastern Slovakia in the first week of August: Spisska Nova Ves, Presov, Kosice, Humenne and Bardejov. In each of these cities they organised a small activity, where they tried to show the beauty of Falun Gong exercises in contrast to the five years of brutal persecution against Falun Gong in China. Many people stopped to read posters detailing the sad stories of the victims. They often voiced their disagreement and signed a petition calling for an end to the persecution.

In most of the cities, the local media visited our gatherings and helped us to inform the public about the persecution in China. The reporter in Presov was surprised, "How come I have never heard about this persecution? Why are the foreign media sleeping?"
Even though many people approached us with different opinions, after chatting with us and hearing our reasons for doing all this, they wished us success. Our petition was signed by hundreds of people. By-passers remarked sometimes, they knew about the human rights abuses against people who practise Falun Gong from the news and they support us.
In the smaller cities, children often joined our activities and helped us to distribute flyers. Some even learned the exercises. In Presov and Humenne, we organised successful workshops, where we taught the five sets of Falun Gong exercises for free and talked about our experiences of practising Falun Gong.

(Clearwisdom.net) On August 7, 2004, the annual Corn Festival Parade was held in La Habra, Southern California. Falun Gong practitioners in Southern California participated in the parade to display the beauty of Falun Dafa to local residents and to expose Jiang's group's brutal persecution of Falun Gong practitioners.

Falun Gong practitioners win the first prize award for the parade and an award
for best overall float
Though the sun was blazing, many residents were waiting along the street to watch the parade. When the Falun Gong practitioners appeared, they attracted many people's attention.
The Falun Gong practitioners' entry was composed of a dance group, a waist drum team and a float. The practitioners demonstrated the five sets of exercises on the float. Many people were attracted by the peaceful and beautiful atmosphere, and imitated the exercise movements along the roadside. When the practitioners who distributed Dafa materials walked by, quite a few spectators took the initiative to learn the facts about Falun Gong and thanked the practitioners for their efforts.
Falun Gong practitioners won the first prize award for the parade and an award for best overall float, which made the Falun Gong contingent a special focus of the spectators.
(Clearwisdom.net)
Recently while I was at work, the topic of Falun Gong was brought up. One of my colleagues said, "I have been seeing some (truth-clarification) flyers in the area where I live and I have been reading them. To me what is on these flyers is simply reactionary."
I was very shocked after hearing him say that. In the past this person was deeply poisoned by lies and propaganda. He had some misunderstandings about Falun Gong and thought that Falun Gong practitioners' distributing flyers was reactionary. However, gradually his misunderstanding was eliminated after I persisted in clarifying the truth for over a year, and handled myself in an upright manner by keeping myself to a high standard at work and in my daily life.
That day I was really surprised when I heard him make the same comment again. I asked him why he said that. He said, "You can say that Jiang Zemin is not good and you can also oppose Jiang Zemin, because it is Jiang Zemin who suppresses Falun Gong, and these are all understandable. But, why do you say that the Communist Party is not good and the Chinese government is not good. After reading these materials, I have a feeling that these flyers are talking about overthrowing the government."
Consequently, I again explained to him that cultivators do not get involved in politics but only cultivate genuinely and become good people. In the end, he said, "You say one thing and the flyers say another. Now I'm confused and I don't know if Falun Gong is good or bad."
My heart was heavy after listening to his comment. Actually we all know that at the beginning it was Jiang Zemin's decision to suppress Falun Gong. Jiang has used the entire Party and government to suppress Falun Gong. Many people in government departments do not know the truth and have been poisoned by the propaganda.
Jiang Zemin does not represent the Party, nor does he represent the Chinese government. In the workplace sometimes when we talked about the current phenomenon of corruption and embezzlement in China, this colleague would also say that the Communist Party was not good. He was also willing to read truth-clarification flyers distributed by Falun Gong practitioners and he had read a lot of them. Due to the influence of the evil's defamatory propaganda (stating that we are anti-Party and anti-government), whenever he read words that described the Communist Party as being bad, he would not be very understanding and he would even be turned off and become very resistant.
Now we have many different truth-clarification materials. This would then suggest that Falun Dafa practitioners should monitor and guard against this with the mind of being responsible to the Fa and to sentient beings. We should write it from the readers' angle and should be more considerate of the mentality of today's Chinese people.
The truth-information we write about should achieve the goal of saving sentient beings.
Below are my suggestions for fellow practitioners' when they write truth-clarification information:
1.Please make a distinction between the "the Jiang group," "the Chinese government," "the Communist Party" and other similar references. People in China can now understand it and accept it when you condemn Jiang Zemin. Yet, if you said that the Communist Party was not good or the Chinese government suppressed Falun Gong, a great deal of people cannot accept that. They would in turn have misunderstandings about Falun Gong and think they are involved in politics.
After all, many people in China have been through the evils' defamatory propaganda for so many years. Therefore, their heads are filled with preconceived notions. In order to save these precious Chinese people, the situation requires Falun Gong practitioners to put themselves in their position first before putting our words into writing.
We should never use sweeping or extreme words. When we write information to explain the facts about the persecution, it is better to use "Jiang" to replace the "Chinese government" or the "Communist Party." We should also clarify our position: We are not against the Communist Party, nor are we against the Chinese government, and we are only against this persecution initiated by Jiang Zemin and his followers.
2. Do not talk too high level when we clarifying the truth. I once saw a truth-clarification letter given to me by a fellow practitioner. It was a three-page letter. The first page was addressed to a collaborator who had "enlightened" along an evil path and it used harsh words to condemn a collaborator's sinful actions of helping the evil to attack Falun Gong practitioners.
The second page talked about Teacher's coming down to this human world to save sentient beings similar to Jesus' and Sakyamuni's coming down to the human world to save sentient beings. It was not until the third page that the facts about the persecution of Falun Gong and the local persecution was revealed.
I personally think it's better not to let everyday people read letters that are addressed to collaborators that have "enlightened" along an evil path. Some information can only be understood by cultivators and it is probably difficult for people without a foundation in the teachings of Falun Gong to understand this kind of content. Perhaps it will have a negative effect.
Do not speak at too high level when we clarify the truth. Nowadays the Chinese people's inclination toward attributing anything to the divine is very slight. They do not believe in the existence of gods, nor do they believe that Jesus and Sakyamuni had come down to the world to offer salvation to people. Plus the fact that Jiang's political group once spread the propaganda about Teacher in relation to Sakyamuni--all these have made it even harder for them to believe that Teacher is here to save sentient beings.
Quite the opposite, it will probably create an even deeper misunderstanding. My father, who is an atheist, once asked me a question when I explained the truth to him, "Some Falun Gong practitioners told me that your Teacher came to the world to save mankind, is it so?" He said that he did not believe that at all, and then he made some disrespectful comments about Teacher.
3. Practitioners who are responsible for distributing truth-clarification materials should also assume a monitoring and guarding role. If a flyer indeed contains information that is unsuitable for everyday people, don't distribute it. Meanwhile, you should also send feedback to practitioners who make truth-clarification materials for correction before you distribute them.
Don't do things quickly in order to save trouble or to distribute more materials. Our goal should be that when we distribute a flyer containing the facts of the persecution of Falun Gong to the public, they would understand the truth after reading it. We should be careful to edit any fighting mentality out of the content of our materials. We should rationally and clearheadedly use our wisdom to explain the facts about the persecution of Falun Dafa to the public.
As the grand current of Fa-rectification progresses, the evil in other dimensions is becoming smaller and can no longer interfere with our truth-clarification efforts on a large scale. Yet, the remaining dark minions of the old forces are not content with the situation, and they constantly make trouble by taking advantage of the gaps created by practitioners' attachments.
Just when I was writing this article, I had a power outage at home three times in a row. Yet, my next-door neighbor did not have a power outage. This was something that had never happened before. Those dark minions probably have come over to make trouble again and wanted to stop me from sharing something important with practitioners.
We can tell that those dark minions are also frightened when Falun Dafa practitioners are clearheaded and rational in the Fa-rectification, because this way they won't be able to interfere with our assisting Teacher with the Fa-rectification and there will not be any gap that they can take advantage of.
(Clearwisdom.net) The three things that Teacher wants us to do (send forth righteous thoughts, study the Fa and clarify the truth) all compliment each other. If one of the three is not done correctly, it will affect the other two. Even worse, the old forces can take advantage of any gaps to further the persecution and damage Dafa.
Some practitioners felt that they were doing a good job at cultivation and had firm righteous thoughts, and they wouldn't listen to others' opinions. While we were doing Fa-rectification projects, other practitioners pointed out areas in which we needed to be careful, such as additional security measures for our computers. One particular practitioner replied, "If you let go of your attachment then everything will be ok." He refused to listen, using "letting go of your attachment" as his excuse, and neglected the necessary security measures. This problem is very common, so I want to talk about my experience.
In my experience, if you really let go of your attachment, of course everything will be ok. But the things that we are attached to are like mountains and, even if you say you "let go of your attachment," is it really so? Cultivation is a process. Teacher said in "Teaching the Fa at the 2004 Chicago Conference,"
"If you took a look in the extreme microcosm at the material formed by
