Imprisoned Man in Daqing Incapacitated, Still Awaits Medical Parole

September 11, 2017 |   By a Minghui correspondent in Heilongjiang Province

(Minghui.org) A Daqing City resident imprisoned for his faith has become incapacitated, but the authorities still haven’t approved his request for medical parole.

Mr. Liu Fubin was arrested on July 13, 2009 for refusing to renounce Falun Gong, a spiritual discipline being persecuted by the Chinese communist regime. He was sentenced in May 2010 to 10 years in Tailai Prison.

The prison guards abused Mr. Liu on a regular basis. Most recently, he was placed in solitary confinement for 15 days in May 2017, during which time he went on a hunger strike in protest.

He was let out of solitary confinement on June 2. Though he resumed eating, he had trouble keeping food down. He threw up whatever he ate.

His family didn’t learn of his eating difficulty until early July, but their request for his medical parole was repeatedly denied because the prison authorities claimed he wasn’t sick enough.

By August 18, Mr. Liu had been unable to eat well for 78 days. It wasn’t until then that the guards took him for a medical examination. He was diagnosed with lacunar infarcts, lung sarcoidosis, pericardial effusion, and cardiac ischemia. The doctors, however, could not pinpoint what caused his frequent vomiting. Mr. Liu was brought back to prison after the checkup. He often felt shortness of breath and chest pain.

The prison authorities still refused to grant him medical parole. Mr. Liu’s condition kept worsening. His family received a phone call on August 31 and was told that Mr. Liu had just been hospitalized.

Mr. Liu’s loved ones noted that he had become incapacitated. They again requested medical parole for him. The prison authorities claimed he was still not sick enough, but they agreed to forward the parole request to their supervising agency, which has yet to issue a response.
